A relationship expert has questioned why the Hollywood star keeps going after 'fantasy' women who never seem to work out
Leonardo DiCaprio is a master of the movie epic and it seems his love life is all about fantasy too.The Hollywood star is once again in the arms of a beautiful blonde who becomes the tenth – yes, a Titanic tenth – Victoria’s Secret model to date him.
The lingerie lovelies are dubbed Angels. But is Leo just a sad old devil or is he actually in Heaven?
Leo, 41, set tongues wagging on a passionate outing with his latest lady, Danish model Nina Agdal , 24.
They were spotted wrapped together in the sea and then smooching on the sands of Malibu, California, last week.
When Leo first started dating Angels he was about the same age. Now he’s the best part of two decades older and a relationship expert believes the recurring pattern IS fulfilling a fantasy.
With £165million in the bank from movies like Titanic, The Aviator, The Great Gatsby and his Oscar-winning The Revenant , DiCaprio makes a great catch – assuming he wants to be caught.
Relationship guru Dr Gilda Carle says the actor is a classic “modeliser” – someone who cannot stop themselves pursuing “fantasy” women, even when they know it never works out.
She says: “People who are modelisers have a particular need for the fantasy. These women Leonardo dates do not represent real women, they represent a make-believe image – they are beautiful pieces of sculptures on his arm.
“They work for him. They want to be seen with him and he wants to be seen with them. To all of us, the fantasy at first looks better than the reality, but most of us grow out of that. Leonardo hasn’t.”
Is he obsessed by dating women of a certain look and type? And why, bar one or two exceptions, don’t the relationships last?
Dr Gilda says: “Addiction is too strong a word, but it is too tempting not to go there. He probably ends these relationships when he realises these women are actually real. That they have real issues, real needs. He is not interested in satisfying their needs. If it’s too real and messy he is not interested.”
Leo’s list of Angels started back in the mid-1990s when he dated his first Victoria’s Secret model, Bridget Hall, now 38. The American pair dated for a few months. Then came reported flings with Naomi Campbell, 46, Helena Christensen, 47, and Eva Herzigova, 43.
Brazilian Gisele Bundchen, 36, was Leo’s love for five years, until 2005. She was rumoured to end it, realising he wasn’t going to propose and saying with an air of resignation: “We were just not meant to be boyfriend and girlfriend, but I respect him enormously and I wish him nothing but the best.”
Next came Israeli beauty Bar Refaeli, 31. They dated on-and-off for six years, until 2011.
During an “off” period, in 2009, Leo wooed Russian-American model Anne Vyalitsyna, 30, a newcomer to the lingerie brand.
Then, shock horror, a rare departure from type as actress Blake Lively, 28, dated Leonardo. Just for a few months.
In 2012, another Angel beckoned in the shape of US model Erin Heatherton, 27. Ten months later they also split, citing work commitments. Like most of the actor’s exes, Erin has stayed friends and she calls him a “wonderful person”.
Next up, in 2013, was German model Toni Garrn, 24, who was gone by the end of 2014. Reports say a sighting of Leo leaving a club with 20 girls played a part in the split.
Last year, there was American model turned Baywatch actress Kelly Rohrbach, 26. Links with singer Rihanna and Irish TV presenter Laura Whitmore were rumoured too, plus a fling with Joey Essex’s ex, model Roxy Horner.
But now he is with Nina, who he was first linked with two years ago. She once dated Brit Max George, singer with The Wanted. Despite holidays on Long Island and in the Bahamas, a friend has said Nina and Leo’s relationship is “super casual”.
And he continues to surround himself with beautiful women.
When his charity foundation hosted a fundraiser on a 300ft yacht in St Tropez last week a string of Angels were on board including his exes Toni Garnn and Naomi Campbell, plus Lily Donaldson, Constance Jablonski, Joan Smalls, Doutzen Kroes and Alessandra Ambrosio.
And if there weren’t enough beauties already, a posse of models included Lais Ribeiro, Barbara Palvin, Eniko Mihalik, Soo Joo Park, Hana Jirickov. Showbiz buddies Bono and Mariah Carey were also on board.
The glitz was all a far cry from DiCaprio’s hard knocks background. He grew up in East Hollywood where he witnessed seedy scenes of drug taking and street sex as a kid.
He was determined to do better and described finding fame as “like winning the lottery”.
So the fear of losing it could be another reason for having a younger woman on his arm.
Dr Gilda, who offers relationship advice on her website drgilda.com, adds: “There is always a shelf life in Hollywood whoever you are. These women are young, they help preserve his youth.”
And then of course, there is Leo’s mum Irmelin, a Russian refugee who went to the US in the 1950s.
She attends countless premieres and awards nights with Leo and is the apple of his eye. Sources say she vets his girlfriends – and was responsible for his split with Blake Lively, pronouncing her “up herself”.
Leo’s parents split when he was young and often it was him and his mum against the world.
Dr Gilda says: “Usually men who are fixated with taking care of their mum are less inclined to find a mate.” Leo’s best – and platonic – friend Kate Winslet also holds a special place in his heart after filming Titanic almost 20 years ago.
They appear to adore each other. In 2009, on stage at the Golden Globes, Kate, 40, said: “I’m so happy I can stand here and tell you how much I’ve loved you for 13 years.” Leo blew her a kiss.
So, with mum and Kate claiming so much affection, is there a space in for a wife? Just maybe. On the one hand he has said: “You can’t predict marriage or plan it. It’s just going to happen when it happens.”
But he has also admitted: “I definitely feel a need to make my life more than just my career... I want to get married and have children.”
Ultimately, he really needs to want it to make it happen, says Dr Gilda.
After all, George Clooney finally found love at 53, marrying British lawyer Amal Alamuddin, 38.
Leo’s only 41, so he’s got years on Clooney. And at his current rate, that’s plenty of time for more Angels...
Is Leo living every man's dream or just lonely?
