Pep kick off with a win
City 2 Sunderland 1. Pep Guardiola’s reign got underway with a win –
but also with a warning that his transition will not be a comfortable or
easy one.
A late own goal by Paddy McNair, signed from Manchester United a
few days ago, clinched the victory, and the Blues deserved the three
points.
But Sunderland exposed a frailty or two in this hotch-potch of a
defence, and better teams will give City serious problems unless they
reinforce quickly.
Willy Caballero stepped in after Joe Hart was dropped – and
given a clear sign his future lies away from the club – but he was
hardly put under any pressure by the Black Cats.
City won’t find it so easy in Bucharest against fired-up Steaua
on Tuesday night, with their Champions League campaign at stake,
although they should have Nicolas Otamendi back by then.
The big plus point was Raheem Sterling, who earned Sergio
Aguero’s penalty and was a menace throughout – he was bought with Pep in
mind, and he already looks twice the player whose season fizzled out in
May and who had a dreadful Euros for England.

Second season syndrome hits champions Leicester
Leicester City ’s title defence began with a whimper as crisis club Hull overcame the odds to cause an opening-day upset.
Jamie
Vardy – the Foxes’ 24-goal top scorer last season – failed to take
three good first-half chances before the home side took the lead seconds
before the interval.
Abel Hernandez and Adama Diomande both had a
claim on the goal, as they went for an overhead kick together after
Kasper Schmeichel had clawed out a Curtis Davies header from Robert
Snodgrass’ corner.
Riyad Mahrez equalised from the penalty spot
at the start of the second half after referee Mike Dean ruled that Tom
Huddlestone had tripped Demarai Gray. But Snodgrass drove Hull
back into the lead from 20 yards when Danny Simpson cleared Ahmed
Elmohamady’s right-wing cross into his path.

Welcome back Burnley! Both teams might be tipped for the drop – but if this first-match show of spirit was rewarded, they would stay up. And when you consider that both are works-in progress, with more
possible signings on the way, it’s too early to write them off as
certain relegation candidates.
Burnley bossed much of the early play, penning Swansea into their own half – and sent out a warning shot just six minutes into this opening encounter.
Leroy Fer celebrates with his team-mates
Old hand Scott Arfield ran on to a set-up by Welsh International Sam
Vokes to lash a first-time, long-range blockbuster that keeper Lukasz
Fabianski did well to keep out. A linesman had his flag up, but the ref
waved play on.
Etienne Capoue celebrates with his team-mates
Southampton’s chances of victory in new boss Claude Puel’s first
Premier League game were boosted in the 75th minute when sub Ben Watson was sent off just 11 minutes after he came on for hauling back Shane Long as he raced through on goal. But Watford held on as Walter Mazzarri began his Hornets reign with a point.
Full-time Southampton 1-1 Watford
Nathan Redmond scored on his Southampton debut to grab his side a point against Watford. Etienne Capoue had given the visits the lead with an excellent strike in the first half. Redmond signed from Norwich in the summer.
Full-time: Middlesbrough 1-1 Stoke Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick earned a point for Stoke at the Riverside. New boy Alvaro Negredo gave Boro the lead on their return to the Premier League but the home side couldn’t hang on. Negredo scored with his first shot for the home side, as he did on his Manchester City debut.

Full-time: Crystal Palace 0-1 West Brom Salomon Rondon’s header secured a victory for Tony Pulis over his old side at Selhurst Park.

Full-time: Everton 1-1 Tottenham
Full-time at Goodison Park in what was a real game of two halves.
Everton dominated the first half and probably should have led by more than one goal but they were forced to hold on in the end.
Erik Lamela’s equaliser changed the complexion of the game and
debutant goalkeeper Stekelenburg came to the rescue for Ronald Koeman.
